Getting There
Most tourists arrive in Iran at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran, however there are several other entry points and methods of travelling to Iran.
By Air
By far the most popular method of travelling to Iran. If you live in the UK then there is a very convenient daily British Airways flight which leaves from London Heathrow in the evening and arrives the next day in Tehran. When we travelled in November 2006 we paid £435 each for the return flight.
There are also flights from the Iranian national carrier Iran Air and a new Iranian airline Mahan, which operates direct flights to Iran from Manchester and Birmingham in the UK.
The flight time is approximately six hours.
By Train
If you have more time and a sense of adventure then it is possible to travel all the way from London to Tehran by train! This involves travelling by train to Istanbul then taking the weekly "Trans Asia Express" to Tehran.
The total journey time is approximately 6 days. Check out the excellent The Man in Seat Sixty-One website which includes a detailed article on this journey, along with several traveller reports.
By Road
There are road border crossings from Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan into Iran. There is very little information available on these crossings, do ensure they are open before attempting to cross as they have been known to close with very little notice.
Once you have decided on your method of travelling to Iran you can start to plan your itinerary...
